Beyonce’s music video style is more consistent than you’d expect
Nearly 12 years ago to the day after releasing “Crazy in Love”—the hit single featuring Jay Z off her debut solo album, Dangerously in Love—it seems that Beyonce is looking back on her earlier music video looks for inspiration. Yesterday Nicki Minaj and Bey debuted the video for “Feeling Myself,” shot at Coachella, which mines the Beyonce archive for style signatures she’s been sporting for more than a decade while adding in some new notes, like an Off-White parka and a Givenchy jersey.

Don’t believe us? The proof is in the accessories. In 2003, Beyonce’s preferred flair included cocked baseball hats and shoulder-grazing gold earrings—statement pieces that work well on camera. Come 2015 and she’s wearing both items in the “Feeling Myself” video. That’s not the only coincidence. True Beyonce fans will remember the “Crazy in Love” video for the sequence in which Jay Z raps in front of a burning car, Bey dancing by his side. (And they’ll remember her mind-boggling dance moves, also still intact.) During the Jay Z sequence, Bey sports a one-piece swimsuit with a fur coat—a very 2003 look that’s not the easiest or most logical pairing to pull off. Fast-forward a dozen years and you’ll find Bey and Minaj in coordinated one-pieces and Pepto-pink fur jackets in the “Feeling Myself” flick. If there’s one thing you can say about Bey, it’s that she knows what works and she’s sticking to it. (See also: her Kale sweatshirt, her flowing hair, and her marriage to Jay Z.)
